Intro
Today I will be teaching you about the Incas. I will teach you about the housing, temples, food and royalty. Enjoy!
Housing
One cool thing about the Incas is that their houses are very unique. They carved big bumps in the rocks and on another rock they would do the exact same pattern but it looked like two big legos. They would put those two rocks together and the two big rocks would stay together. They also had music there for the king! It was like a window but with no glass and it did not show outside. So it was like a big rectangle-like hole and the servants would sound like they were meditating like “OOOUUU MMMM” and the holes would make the noise echo and that is how the king listened to music instead of spotify.
Temple
There were many churches and temples so they had to have some staff. They would choose these people called the “Quechua aclla cuna” which meant the “chosen women.” The chosen women had to make food, keep the sacred fire going and sew the emperor's temple clothes. And the girl had to be 8-10 to get picked to be a chosen woman. And the girl would work for the rest of her life and be given as a wife to one of the Inca warriors. if the woman ever had a child before she was given to the warrior there would be 4 punishments, 1- the girl would be buried alive. 2-the boyfriend would be hung by the neck until he dies. 3- The boyfriend's family would be hung by the neck too. 4- The boy's village would be torn down. But there was a way to escape these horrible punishments, it was to say “The sun is his dad!” because the Incas worshiped the sun god so that they would never hurt the sun god.
Food
If you were wondering what food the Incas ate, they ate a lot of potatoes, corn and tomatoes. Sometimes the Incas got very bad weather: there was (1) good and nice rain. It would help make crops. (2) winter. In this weather it was very hard to make crops. So when it was winter they had to save their food and stop growing crops. So they made warehouses. The warehouses would help them store their food.
Another weather issue was “el niño.” It was when the warm and cold waters mixed together sometimes they would have good weather to grow things or years of bad weather with no rain. And when that happened they had to eat the food that they had stored in the warehouses. So that is why the Incas only ate a little more than half of the food that they grew each year. They stored the rest in warehouses for the years when they could not grow crops.
We saw how they grew their crops on terraces (see in picture in the end.)
Royalty
The Incas also had lords before the Spanish came. They had 8 lords and 1 emperor. They had a nice balance between king and queen. They would both have the same amount of power. The men went out and herded the llamas and the women made the wool into yarn. They were very colorful with the yarn by taking parasites from the cacti, flowers and corn and boiled it with the yarn to change its color. They took the blood of the bug and put lime juice on it and that made it orange and took ice also and rubbed that on the blood and that made it pink.
They also had gold and silver. But when the Spanish people came they had guns and swords and there were 150 Spanish people and 10,000 Incas. The Incas had bones and skin for their weapons. The Spanish took out 8,000 Incas in 2 hours and the rest they made into slaves.
Conclusion
I hoped you liked my research about the Incas and their housing, temples, the food and their royalty!
Machu Picchu
Inca Warehouses for food -- it is way up on the hill. And they carved a man's face to protect the warehouse!
I love learning about the Incas. What interesting people and customs. Thanks for sharing ❤️
